How a gamer is gaming YouTube to become the top channel

Posted on June 19, 2014 by brasscount Posted in adversarial gamification, gamification of performance, gamification of results, strategy .

Full disclosure, I am not a fan of YouTube as a medium for intellectual growth. My children, on the other hand, find deep meaning in watching game videos that they find humorous, engaging, and that I find to be crude representations of teenage idiocy (you kids get off my lawn!)

But I always find a measure of brilliance in anyone who can figure out how to game a system in order to optimize their results. Enter PewDiePie…

So a young swedish guy plays video games on Youtube, does and says ridiculous things and becomes the number one Youtube Channel… Sounds like a hack, in the classical sense of the term, right?

The Game Theorists YouTube channel did a remarkably astute summary of how to use Youtube’s algorithm’s to create a cycle of new views, explaining PewDiePie’s success. You can watch it here:

http://youtu.be/EgMqhEMhVV8

Interesting way to drive engagement. Too bad I can’t go back and video marathon gaming sessions from the late eighties and early nineties to capture crude juvenile humor and make YouTube video stars out of my own group of geeks…

Extrinsic versus intrinsic motivators in game behavior

Interesting article distinguishing scoring from the game itself… Like money, the score is not an end in and of itself…

Fascinating article discussing gamification and game-based learning. The description of Fiero is awesome!

A security education game from Microsoft

Posted on December 5, 2013 by brasscount Posted in gamification of awareness / knowledge, gamification of performance, gamification theory .

So one of our security rockstars was at ISACA a few weeks back and picked up this beautiful little example of a gamified security education product.

It is a security development life cycle playing card game called “escalation of privilege.” The game allows players to play a threat against a vulnerability type in order to get developers to think through their coding processes. If you, or anyone at Microsoft, know who developed this, I would LOVE to talk with them.

Genius!

An idea that we are starting to work on.

Brandon Dunlap had an interesting idea for a method to develop security tabletop exercises. We refined it a little, talked to Jan Fogleman, and a new concept in gamified security program development, training, and scenario development is born. More to follow as we build it out, but here is inspiration for those who have a long memory.
